MOTORIST Alan Mahony was a bit miffed when he found that parking machines in Huddersfield don't give change.

He wanted to use the multi-storey above the bus station but found he did not have the right coins.

So there was no option but to pay £2 for a three- hour stay instead of £1.50.

But he saw red when he made the mistake of returning 20 minutes over time to discover a penalty ticket on his windscreen.

Mr Mahony, of Bierley, Bradford, is now demanding the return of the 50p he overpaid on parking.

He said: "I feel aggrieved at the way in which I have received this fine, given the fact that I overpaid in the first place.

"I think local authorities should have a duty to give change. Most private car parking companies do."

Kirklees Council is not saying whether or not it will refund the 50p to Mr Mahony.

A spokeswoman said: "Machines which offer change are available but are not generally used because they need to store large sums of money which makes them vulnerable to attack.

"Customers may prefer to use the new system at Kingsgate where they pay on exit for the hours used.

"This minimises overpayment."
