Don't dig out those winter woollies just yet!

That was the message from Huddersfield weather expert Paul Stevens as the town basked in temperatures more akin to early summer.

The mercury reached a balmy 17 degrees Celsius (63 degrees F) on Tuesday of this week and that left Huddersfield warmer than sunspots like Madrid or Athens.

And Mr Stevens expects that we can see the milder weather sticking with us well into November – and possibly as far as Christmas.

“The meteorological models all suggest it is likely to stay relatively mild for the next few weeks, although it may be a good deal wetter.

“The temperatures we recorded on Tuesday are normally those we would see in May or early June and certainly not towards the end of October.

“They are three or four degrees above normal and could well stay above average for some time to come.”

But it has been a much wetter month than normal, which is good news after several dry months in summer.

So far in October Huddersfield has had 80mm of rainfall, compared to the average monthly total of 65.

More heavy rain is on the way before the weekend and Mr Stevens is also expecting the area to be hit by stormy conditions late on Sunday and into Monday.

He said winds in some areas could reach 60mph and would also bring in heavy rain.

“But the main message is that the rest of October and indeed much of November could well see the mild weather stick with us.

“It will mean a marked change from the bitter cold of last winter and will be good news for the shopkeepers, as it should be decent weather for people to get out and do their Christmas shopping.”

Other parts of the country have been hit by bad weather in recent days and more is on the way.

Heavy rains and strong winds are expected to lash the UK over the coming week.

With surface flooding likely, the RAC is warning motorists of the risk of driving through deep flood water.
