Massive plans for road and rail schemes to help travellers in West Yorkshire and Huddersfield have got Government backing.

Chancellor George Osborne gave the go-ahead for a new High Speed 3 (HS3) rail link between Manchester and Leeds, running through Huddersfield and Dewsbury, and the creation of a new four-lane M62 motorway.

The £300 million transport package to revolutionise connectivity across the Northern Powerhouse will specifically benefit Yorkshire.

It will give the green light to HS3, which will look to slash journey train times between Leeds and Manchester to 30 minutes from almost 50 minutes.

And the region will also benefit from up to £75m worth of investment looking at options to build a Trans-Pennine tunnel between Sheffield and Manchester, following the route of the Woodhead Pass.

There is also a £161million fund for Highways England to accelerate upgrades to the M62.

The busy transPennine motorway crosses the moors above Huddersfield and long stretches are already being turned into “Smart” motorways.

Mr Osborne said: “Amid growing uncertainty in the global economy it is more important than ever that we move forwards in our work to build a Northern Powerhouse.”
