A DAD who helps run a charity in memory of his son was overcome with emotion after a surprise donation.

Ray Spencer, 68, of Waterloo , is part of a committee for the Andrew Spencer Memorial Trust .

He attended a race night at Milnsbridge Bowling Club in Cowlersley which raised £679.

But he was left surprised and deeply touched when club officials produced a cheque for another £600 raised by the club’s weekly lottery game topped up with donated loose change.

“I was absolutely shocked,” said Ray. “I was pretty emotional about it all and then they asked me to say a few words.

“It took me a minute or two to compose myself.

“It’s been almost five years since Andrew died and it’s lovely that he’s still remembered.”

Andrew, 33, a dancer and theatrical performer, died suddenly at the family home in July 2008.

Andrew had epilepsy but the cause of his death was unknown.

His parents Ray and Lesley launched a memorial trust and more than £20,000 has been raised for epilepsy causes and heart charity Cardiac Risk in the Young.

Mr Spencer said the trust preferred to buy needed items rather than just donate money.

“We are grateful for everyone’s support,” he added.
