A village hall is opening its doors to the public – in a bid to map out its future.

Kirklees Council and supporters of the village hall are exploring the possibility of the premises at Armitage Road being put into community ownership.

Now an open weekend is to be held on June 5 and 6 at the village hall in Armitage Road to allow residents to share their thoughts on its future.

The event has been organised by Milnsbridge Village Hall and Community Trust, which is in talks with Kirklees Council over a possible transfer of assets to put the village hall in community ownership.

The open weekend is also being backed by Milnsbridge Village Group, which includes Milnsbridge Business Association and local residents.

Trust secretary Deborah Wright said: “We are still in the consultation stage with Kirklees, which owns the hall, and we have yet to submit an application to transfer the assets.

“The weekend is for us to gauge the level of interest, find out if there is a need for the village hall and what people want from it.”

Business owner Chris Worsley, chairman of the Milnsbridge Village Group, said the event also aimed to raise awareness that the village hall was “open for business” and to look at how to move it forward. The hall already provides a venue for dance and yoga classes, dog training sessions and music groups.

Trust president Robin Beaumont will welcome visitors to the event, which takes place from 7pm to 9pm on Friday, June 5, and from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, June 5.

Members of singing group Songsational and Pennine Academy of Dance will provide entertainment on Friday evening while two Huddersfield Giants players will be in attendance at about noon on Saturday. Other attractions include home baking, a bouncy castle and a pop-up photo studio.
