A MOSQUE housed in an old church has revealed plans to add minarets to the building.

Officials from Abu Bkr Mosque on Church Street, Paddock, have applied for permission to install a new “feature canopy” to the building’s facade.

The church was converted into a mosque five-years-ago and has been refurbished to accommodate large prayer halls and teaching rooms, for children to be educated in Islamic studies.

Now a plan to alter the outside of the building has been lodged with Kirklees Council planning officials.

Mosque leaders have commissioned the development to create an improved entrance to the building.

They have used the building as a mosque and education centre for several years.

It was originally Paddock Methodist Church.

The feature consists of two minarets and a dome on a single storey canopy supported by four columns.

The minarets and dome will also be lit from the bottom to highlight them in the evenings and at night.

The applicants say the features would be made of natural stone, to match the existing stone on the building, while the supporting canopy would be made from a smooth stone to match the tone of the existing building.

The mosque recently received the green light for its plan to build an extension to the male entrance.

Public consultation on the latest plan runs until January 8, 2013.
