A man has admitted to a New Year’s Eve street brawl during which he assaulted his former partner and her sister.

Anthony Newsome, of Nettleton Avenue in Mirfield, had been drinking prior to the assaults outside his ex’s home.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that Melissa Surman was at her Ravensthorpe home with her sister Vicky Surman when Newsome got in touch.

A text conversation between them then turned into an argument and Newsome turned up at her Lee Road address at 11pm.

Jill Seddon, prosecuting, said: “The defendant was abusive toward Melissa.

“He then grabbed her, pulled her out of the property and struck her.

“Her sister was also pulled from the property.

“Both were called offensive names, ragged around and struck by the defendant.”

Melissa’s hair was also pulled during the attack when ended when her sister hit Newsome, the court was told.

The women went back inside and police were called.

Newsome admitted fighting with the sisters in the street and that he had been drinking beforehand.

The court heard that the 38-year-old was initially offered a caution by police.

This was on the condition that he wrote a letter of apology to the sisters and attended at a domestic violence course.

But he was prosecuted after missing this course and pleaded guilty to the two assaults.

Newsome’s case was adjourned until May 10 for a probation report.
