A CHARITY auction organised by monks at Mirfield’s Community of the Resurrection, has raised £51,000.

Star items such as Robert Thompson’s “mouse table and chairs” went for £17,800 while a Simon Palmer Watercolour sold for £4,000.

Auction organiser Father John Gribben said: “We are delighted with how the auction went.

“People came from across the country to join in and came yesterday to collect many of their items.

“It is a fantastic amount and my brother George Gribben, who came from Belfast to be the auctioneer, was amazed at the total.

“Some items were surprising, with an ivory figure of Christ selling for £1,100.

“We have had so much support from the community, students and local residents but it is really a drop in the ocean in the final total.”

The brothers are hoping to revamp the Community’s church which is due to cost nearly £2m.
