A PUB in Mirfield is hoping to cash in on passing trade of a different kind.

The Pear Tree Inn in Huddersfield Road sits on the banks of the River Calder.

Now landlord Alan Ingle is building a jetty mooring for passing boaters to stop off for a tipple.

This week two divers attached huge wooden beams to the pub’s riverside frontage.

A newly-extended beer garden, which includes a new Indian stone flagged area seating an extra 50 people, will be officially opened on Saturday at 1pm.

To celebrate, there will be 45-minute boat trips running from the Pear Tree jetty until 5pm.

The beer garden will also boast a decked terrace with disabled access, barbecue corner, grassed area and permanent downstairs bar.

A new staircase leading from the rear of the kitchen directly into the garden will allow staff to bring food to the al fresco dining area.

Mr Ingle said he was excited by the £15,000 development and added: “We are very lucky to have such a unique position alongside the river.

“More people can now enjoy the peaceful, relaxing, music-free atmosphere this investment has created.”

Mr Ingle has retained the old stump of the original pear tree that once dominated the garden to house a commemorative plaque to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the opening of the new garden.

He has also planted a further four pear trees to represent the four seasons.
