TWO Mirfield school governors are expected to complete a sponsored bike ride over next year’s Tour de France route today.

Alan Wilkinson and Stephen Butler, governors at Castle Hall Academy, hope to raise at least £1,000.

They were following the 220-mile route of the Grand Depart through Yorkshire.

They took in Leeds to Harrogate on the first day and then Harrogate to Holme Moss, before missing out Sheffield and travelling to Mirfield.

Funds raised will be shared between the church tower restoration fund at St Mary’s Church in Mirfield and the Friends of Castle Hall Academy.

The school group will buy cycling-related items for students.

Alan and church warden Stephen are both keen cyclists and have completed long distance rides before including a Mirfield to 10 Downing Street protest ride in the successful fight to save Castle Hall from closure four years ago.

The riders were due to be welcomed back to the church at 5pm today.
