A PAPERBOY has died three weeks after a traffic accident.

Declan Newsome, 15, of Trinity Street, in Mirfield, passed away in hospital.

The Castle Hall Academy pupil was seriously injured after his bicycle was in collision with a silver Suzuki at Upper Hopton on July 9.

Declan died in Leeds General Infirmary on Monday.

Clr Vivien Lees-Hamilton, who lives just metres from the scene of the collision at Hopton Avenue, spoke of her sadness at his death yesterday.

“I’m really sorry to hear that Declan has died. My deepest sympathies are with his parents,” she said.

“Everyone in the village has been praying for Declan and people will be really sad that he hasn’t pulled through.”

Clr Lees-Hamilton added that the tragedy should act as a reminder to all drivers going through the village.

Police yesterday re-appealed for witnesses to the accident, which took place at around 7.35am on Monday July 9.

Officers are particularly keen to speak to anyone who saw how the car and bicycle were being driven and ridden along the road at the time.

Anyone who witnessed the accident can call West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team on 01924 293 047 or via 101.

A Police and Communities Together meeting will be held at Croft House at Jackroyd Lane in Upper Hopton from 7pm on September 4.

Clr Lees-Hamilton said: “I have asked Kirklees Council if a casualty reduction officer can come to the meeting.

“I will be pushing for more road safety measures in the village.”
