Mirfield Town Forum meet to agree how to spend £60,000 of public money in the town

RESIDENTS have been invited to a new grassroots meeting.

RESIDENTS have been invited to a new grassroots meeting.

Mirfield Town Forum will meet next Wednesday at 7pm at Northorpe Hall.

The Kirklees Council body will decide how to spend more than £60,000 of public money in the town this year. Police officers will also attend next week’s meeting to update residents on crime in the area.

Last year Kirklees decided to merge the area committees of Mirfield, Kirkburton and Denby Dale to save money.

But Clr Martyn Bolt said yesterday that the merger had failed and was now being reversed.

The Mirfield Conservative said: “We got fewer than 20 people at meetings of the joint committee. Mirfield Area Committee alone used to get 20 to 30 people at each meeting.

“Merging the area committees may have saved money somewhere along the line, but what’s the point of saving money if you’re losing the public’s respect and confidence?

“Mirfield Town Forum is now the local voice which will give people a chance to have their say and hear reports on key issues.

“It’s an area committee by another name.”

However, the combined Mirfield, Kirkburton and Denby Dale Committee still exists. It will hold brief meetings at Huddersfield Town Hall each month to legally sanction spending decided by the three fora in Mirfield, Kirkburton and Denby Dale.
