A TEENAGE refugee from Afghanistan was trying to win the Miss World crown for England today.
Hammasa Kohistani is the first Muslim to represent the country in the final of the controversial competition, which is being held in Sanya, China, this year.
The 18-year-old Muslim fled the hard-line Taliban regime with her parents Khushal and Layla nine years ago and lived in Uzbekistan, Ukraine and Dubai before settling in London.
She is now studying for A-levels as well as modelling.
She is 16-1 third favourite to scoop the overall prize today, with Miss Philippines the bookies' choice.
However, the brunette, currently Miss England, claims her participation in the contest has drawn death threats from Islamic extremists who believe showing off bare flesh is wrong.
