A motorist has been jailed for six months after he led police on a chase through streets in Huddersfield while on licence from prison.

Leeds Crown Court heard traffic officers decided to check on a Ford Focus being driven in St Thomas’s Road on May 3 but when they began to follow it the driver, Mohammed Khaliq, sped off.

They saw him cut in front of a vehicle slowing down for a red traffic light before going through the light and then accelerate away trying to lose the officers.

Louise Gallagher, prosecuting, told the court today - Monday - that on Lockwood Road it reached 50mph and travelled on the wrong side of the road at a mini roundabout as well as going through two further red lights.

At the junction of Walpole Road and Bronte Close in Crosland Moor the car suddenly stopped and two passengers got out and made their escape before the car set off again and turned into a cul-de-sac where Khaliq did a U-turn, colliding with the stationery police vehicle without causing damage as he went back.

The traffic car turned and continued to follow him and a dog unit and the force helicopter as well as other police vehicles were called in to support them.

Eventually with police vehicles oncoming ahead of him Khaliq pulled over in Newsome Road. He refused to turn his engine off and officers smashed the driver’s window and entered through the passenger door to detain him.

She said Khaliq was sentenced to a total of five years in custody at Bradford Crown Court in December 2010 for possession of heroin with intent to supply and possessing a sawn off shotgun and was therefore on licence.

Tony Kelbrick, representing Khaliq, said his driving had been fast “but not furious.”

He added: “He had two friends with him in the car and they did not wish to be stopped by police. At their behest he drove off and when they escaped he foolishly continued to drive.”

He said fortunately no injuries or damage were caused. A self-employed joiner, Khaliq relied on his licence.

Khaliq, 25, of Thorne Road, Thornton Lodge, admitted dangerous driving and was jailed for six months and disqualified for 12 months.

Judge Guy Kearl QC said he had driven over the speed limit trying to escape from the police although not as “high speeds as some cases before this court.”

Having driven dangerously other police officers had to be called in to prevent his driving further.
