One of Kirklees’ most respected councillors has chalked up 25 years of dedicated service.

Mohan Sokhal MBE was elected to Kirklees Council on April 20, 1989, and later served a term as Mayor of Kirklees.

In 1991 he applied to become a magistrate to fulfil a personal ambition to work in a criminal justice setting and in 2001 was awarded an MBE for services to the community.

Last year the popular Greenhead councillor stepped down from his voluntary role as magistrate after 22 years saying it was an ‘honour and a privilege’ to serve his community over such a long period of time.

Former council leader and close political ally Mehboob Khan (Greenhead) said: “Mohan is a great credit to our profession.

“He has worked tirelessly to serve the community in Huddersfield.

“The highlights of Mohan’s political career was his role as the Mayor of Kirklees followed by the recognition of his community work by the Queen with the award of an MBE.

“It’s been a great privilege to work with Mohan for 18 years and he is an excellent role model for young people.”

Mohan said he was delighted to have represented Kirklees residents for such a long time saying: “April 20 is a lucky day for me.”
