A GREAT-grandfather from Huddersfield who died in a crash on a moorland road was due to retire from work next month.

Michael Maher, 69, of Caldercliffe Road, Berry Brow, died in hospital after the crash.

He was badly hurt when his Ford Fiesta careered off Holmfirth Road near Greenfield at 8.30am on Monday.

The car crashed on a right- hand bend and hit a barrier before rolling down an embankment.

Mr Maher was taken to the Royal Oldham Hospital, where he died a short time later.

No-one else was involved in the tragedy.

Mr Maher leaves a wife, Julia, three daughters, Hayley, Michelle and Yvonne, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He had worked as a builder and labourer all of his life and was due to retire in August.

Mr Maher was born in Kilkenny, Ireland, and moved to England 50 years ago.

He was a well-known member of St Patrick's Catholic Centre in Trinity Street, Huddersfield.
