MARGARET Thatcher's former Press secretary, Sir Bernard Ingham, is joining the fight to stop a windfarm being built at a Pennine beauty spot.

He will be the guest speaker at a fund- raising dinner organised by the Saddleworth Moors Action Group at the Saddleworth Hotel, Delph, on Wednesday, February 18.

Power company United Utilities hopes to put up seven 350ft- high wind turbines on the rim of the Castleshaw Valley, between Manchester Road at Standedge and the A640 Nont Sarah's road.

The firm submitted the planning application to Oldham Council on January 14.

Protesters have until February 4 to lodge formal objections.

The valley lies near the National Trust's Marsden Moor estate and the Pennine Way skirts the area.

The uplands attract thousands of tourists and walkers every year.

Opponents say the turbines would ruin a jewel in the crown of Saddleworth Moors.
