THERE was more misery for thousands of drivers on the M62.

Two crashes in the space of an hour yesterday afternoon saw lanes closed on both carriageways near to Huddersfield.

And that meant traffic jams of several miles in both directions, with drivers held up for at least an hour.

The two crashes both happened between Junction 26 at Chain Bar and Junction 27 at Gildersome and meant the tally of shutdowns on the M62 this month reached 10.

The first incident was on the eastbound lanes and involved four vehicles. Thankfully, the drivers of the two vans, a BMW and a Land Rover escaped unhurt.

But Highways Agency staff had to close the first and middle lanes for at least an hour while the damaged vehicles were moved.

That meant queues stretching back as far as Junction 24 at Ainley Top, a distance of almost seven miles.

An hour later, at 3pm, a car and a lorry collided on the westbound carriageway.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene and the woman car driver was taken to hospital with slight injuries.

The incident meant they had to close one lane of the carriageway and the traffic queues stretched back as far as Junction 30.

The two incidents also caused hold-ups on other main roads including the A62 Leeds Road as drivers tried to avoid the motorway.

There was also an accident on the A58 Whitehall Road at Wyke, near Brighouse, to add to the problems.
