Rail passengers in Huddersfield face more weeks of possible disruption because of a cracked line.

There have been a large number of cancelled services so far this week because of problems on the line south of Leeds.

And rail bosses have admitted that the new part needed to carry out a full repair on the broken section will not arrive until June.

Until then they will be working with rail companies to manage traffic over the line.

Trains in and out of Huddersfield have been cancelled as Network Rail tries to ease traffic over the broken section, which is at the junction where several lines merge on the way into Leeds station.

Some of the services to go have been trains to Manchester Airport and others to Leeds, Manchester and York.

Temporary repairs were carried out but a second fault then developed on the stretch.

Andrew Penny, acting area director at Network Rail, said: “We apologise to passengers that a track defect near Leeds station on the line between Doncaster and Leeds is causing disruption to their journeys.

“We have worked with Northern Trains and First Trans Pennine Express to implement a revised timetable for train services which is available via the train operator websites and through National Rail Enquiries to enable passengers to plan their journeys.

“This track defect is in close proximity to one which we repaired earlier this month and is in a very complex section of track. Our engineers will work throughout the night tonight to try to fix the problem, after which we will work with train operators to implement an appropriate timetable.

“The long term solution is to replace the track, with the new component currently being manufactured in France and due for delivery in early June.”
