We've enjoyed the best summer in years.

And it looks as though Huddersfield could also enjoy a warm and dry autumn – after the rain of yesterday and today.

Huddersfield weather expert Paul Stevens believes the town is likely to get warm and generally dry weather right up to the middle of October.

And that comes after a very dry and warm September, with temperatures well above average.

The mood was spoiled somewhat by the persistent rain which fell yesterday but high pressure is on the way back, bringing warmer and dry weather by the weekend.

“We certainly look as if we could have a very good autumn, having had one of the warmest and driest summers for many years, ” said Mr Stevens, of Salendine Nook.

“The forecasting models had predicted some colder weather for October but that has now been pushed back and I think we will have some good days up to the middle of the month.”

Mr Stevens recorded just 52mm of rain in September – some 25% below the average of 65mm.

And the temperatures were also well up, with an average of 16.4 degrees Celsius, well above the normal September average of 15 degrees.

The warmest day of the month saw temperatures in Huddersfield reach a balmy 23 degrees C (73 degrees F).

Mr Stevens said: “The rain we had yesterday, which was likely to continue today, was the first recordable rain we have had for 14 days, which is very good for this time of year.

“Temperatures have also been above normal for the start of October and the high pressure we enjoyed last month looks set to return, bringing warm winds from the south.

“There may be one or two misty mornings but in general we look set to enjoy a good autumn.

“And that’s good news for us all, especially after the very good summer we have had”.
