ANOTHER supermarket could be heading to the Holme Valley.

Talks are believed to be under way regarding a main road site in Honley.

But supermarket chain Morrisons is staying tight-lipped about its alleged interest in land off Woodhead Road, Honley.

The land is currently occupied by Keith Drake agricultural merchants and Kirklees Council’s highways depot.

It is believed a deal between the land’s owners who run the feed firm, Kirklees Council and Morrisons is being negotiated.

Limes Developments, a Lincoln-based firm which specialises in buying land for supermarkets, is thought to be in discussion with Morrisons.

But Morrisons has refused to confirm or deny it has any plans for the site.

A spokesman for Morrisons said: “We are always looking for sites which would be suitable for Morrisons stores but would not wish to comment further at this stage.”

The plot of land – and potential developments on it – have been the source of many rumours in Honley.

It is believed Tesco had put an offer in for the site in June, but it was turned down.

Tesco confirmed they had looked at several options in the area.

The company’s corporate affairs manager Deborah Hayeems said: “Of course, we assessed all potential sites to locate a supermarket where people in Holmfirth could choose to do their main shop closer to home.

“In looking at these sites, we had to take into account cost and suitability.

“We are progressing with an application to bring the derelict Midlothian Garage site in New Mill Road back into use as this provides a good place to locate a food store to serve Holmfirth.

“We think this is the right place for customers and most appropriate in terms of planning policy.”

Campaign group Keep Holmfirth Special (KHS) has said it would welcome a Tesco store in the town – but not on the proposed site off New Mill Road.

The group is suggesting Tesco build a smaller Tesco Express or Tesco Metro in the centre of Holmfirth.

KHS says it has identified a number of locations in Holmfirth for a smaller Tesco store.

KHS chairwoman Margaret Dale said: “We are not against supermarkets; we are not against Tesco.

“We are keen to see the shopping facilities in Holmfirth improved and would welcome a centrally located store. But we think the Midlothian site is the wrong location.”
