Angry motorists took to social media to vent their unhappiness at delays they say were caused by the new traffic lights at Ainley Top.

The lights, which have been fitted as part of improvement works to the busy roundabout which is at junction 24 of the M62, were switched on at 11.26am yesterday.

Workmen carefully removed the orange-coloured covers from around the numerous sets of lights and neatly tied them up with blue nylon cord before the big switch on.

The roundabout has seen 52 casualties in five years so for some motorists the lights and highway improvements carried out at a cost of £2m could not have come too soon.

There are now three lanes and a speed limit cut.

Early in the day there was a shunt which cause problems but for many motorists it was the evening rush hour which made them irate.

Those driving back to Huddersfield from Leeds reported long delays during the rush hour - with some reporting miles of queues on the M62 as motorists sat waiting for the lights to change.

On Facebook Gemma Thompson said: "Awful, queued from junction 25 for 45 mins to get to Ainley Top."

But not everyone agreed. On Facebook James Hemsley wrote: "So far so good! Haven't had to sit in traffic yet at Ainley top and was up there around 17:00 last night... then this morning same again no traffic!"

We'll ask Kirklees Council for their thoughts on how day one went and include their comment here when we receive it.
