HUDDERSFIELD MP Barry Sheerman is backing moves for improved school safety.

The MP, chairman of the Education and Skills Select Committee, has added his name to calls for mandatory sprinklers in schools.

Mr Sheerman said: "I was astounded to learn that sprinklers were not already mandatory in schools.

"Schools are often targets for vandalism and fires.

"Fires in schools can be devastating, especially when school work is destroyed and lives put at risk."

Mr Sheerman made his comments after receiving a letter on the issue from the chairman of the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority Clr Gordon Beever.

Now he has added his name to an Early Day Motion calling for mandatory sprinklers in schools.

Mr Sheerman added: "I agree with the chairman of the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority that every new school and major refurbishment to a school building should include the installation of sprinklers.

"My Select Committee has just started an inquiry into the sustainable schools and we will look closely at the inclusion of sprinklers and other safety measures in school buildings."
