A VICTORY by the far-Right British National Party in a Kirklees by-election would be disastrous, says Huddersfield Labour MP Barry Sheerman.
The BNP's David Exley is one of six candidates in the contest in Heckmondwike on Thursday, August 14.
Mr Sheerman, speaking to Huddersfield Labour Party's general management committee, urged people to oppose the BNP.
He added: "Towns and communities linked to the BNP are seriously undermined as centres for new investment and new jobs.
"These are the dangers we face when our excellent communities become contaminated by an association with the BNP."
The by-election follows the resignation of Tim Crowther as a Labour councillor. He is standing as an independent.
The candidates are Tim Crowther (Ind), Tabasum Aslam (Lib Dem), David Exley (BNP), Roger Roberts (Con), Florence Smith (Lab) and Heidi Smithson (Green).
