VETERAN Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman has been nominated for a national award.

He has been shortlisted for the ePolitix. com Charity Champion Awards in the education and sport class.

The awards honour the work done by Parliamentarians for voluntary causes and campaigns.

Mr Sheerman was nominated by the Huddersfield-based National Children's Centre.

A spokesman for the centre said Mr Sheerman had been a trustee for the charity - which supports children, young people and families in need - for more than 30 years.

He added: "Barry has developed a deep understanding of the issues affecting children and families.

"In particular he understands the role that training, education and skills play in the development of a child through to adulthood.

"He continues to play a central role in ensuring draft legislation is well thought through and that children, young people and adults participate and submit their views in legislative proposals that affect them."

The MP has worked with the charity on numerous campaigns, including Children's Acts and End Child Poverty, and as chairman of the Commons Education Committee.

The award winner will be announced at a ceremony in London on November 29.
