Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney says there should not be a general election now Theresa May has taken over leadership of the Tory Party and become the new Prime Minister.

The Colne Valley MP, who previously backed Mrs May in the Tory leadership contest, says stability is needed.

“A general election is the last thing we need,” he said. Theresa May said there will be no general election. The last thing we need is more uncertainty. It’s really important now that we have a period of stability and I look forward to strong, calm leadership from Theresa May.”

But calls for a general election have been backed by Labour, Greens and the Liberal Democrats.

Mr McCartney said there had been a general election just over a year ago and now wasn’t the time for another.

He added: “I can’t imagine why the Labour Party, in the chaotic situation they are in, would want a general election.”

Labour’s election co-ordinator, West Yorkshire MP Jon Trickett, said: “It is crucial, given the instability caused by the Brexit vote, that the country has a democratically elected prime minister. I am now putting the whole of the party on a general election footing.”

Lib Dem Leader Tim Farron said: “With Theresa May’s coronation we need an early general election. The Tories now have no mandate. Britain deserves better than this.”
