MP Barry Sheerman kick-started Diwali cele-brations by turning on the lights at Huddersfield Town Hall.
He joined members of the community for the start of the Festival of Lights before making his way to the Huddersfield Hindu Temple, where he switched on its lights.
Mr Sheerman said: “This is a wonderful festival that celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.
“It provides an opportunity for all the faiths to come together; we listened to speakers representing Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Christian and Jewish faiths.
“It is a great example of different communities celebrating their shared values.”
Diwali is a festival significant to Hindus. It is known as the Festival of Lights and symbolises the victory of good over evil. Lamps are lit as a sign of hope.
