HUDDERSFIELD'S MP is asking people for their views on how to curb fireworks abuse.

Barry Sheerman today told of widespread concerns about fireworks.

He says his postbag grows around November 5.

A Fireworks Bill has already banned air bombs and made it illegal for under-18s to possess fireworks in public places.

Further measures before November could include a ban on fireworks after 11pm, with a 1am or 2am curfew for festivals such as Bonfire Night and Diwali.

Mr Sheerman said: "We receive many complaints around Bonfire Night about fireworks. These new proposals would make Huddersfield a safer and quieter place to live.

"I hope the public will convey their views either to me or to the Trade and Industry Department."

The new measures fall short of an all-out ban on over-the- counter sales. But Home Secretary David Blunkett says could be further legislation if the proposals do not work.
