A much-loved dad hanged himself at a Huddersfield golf course after a long battle with depression and anxiety.

Newsome man, Martin Cross, 50, took his life in a secluded spot at Longley Park Golf Club after going out for a evening walk with his dog, Kirklees Coroner's Court heard.

A fellow dog walker made the tragic discovery on April 26 after hearing about a search which had been started by Martin’s family and police, following concerns over his welfare.

Martin, who was a ‘talented’ moulder at Broadbent in Huddersfield, had just returned to work earlier that week after taking a break due to stress.

He had been suffering with bouts of depression since 2009 and had been taking anti-depressants but had told his doctor that he was feeling better.

However, he was described as acting out of character on the day of his death, with a work colleague describing him as seeming quiet and argumentative.

His family also became concerned about him later that day following some drinks in their house on Ashenhurst Avenue due to him telling his son that he loved him and giving him a kiss before going for a walk.

Coroner Mary Bell said that Martin took an independent and deliberate act to end his own life that he had contemplated before heading out.

His mum, Sadie Haigh, said: “He didn’t realise it but we loved him all so much. Everyone loved him and he was a wonderful man.”
