Fewer students were robbed during their first weeks at university, according to West Yorkshire Police.

Robbery rates on the streets around the Huddersfield University campus fell by just over half between September 1 and October 13, compared with the previous year.

Two robberies were in Colne Road, which runs between the university campus and student accommodation. There were six in that area last year.

Information given during freshers’ week and regular patrols at times favoured by robbers are thought to have reduced the number of muggings.

A student safety officer, PC Laura Jackson, has also been hired by the Huddersfield South Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), which covers the university beat.

Insp Danny Groiser, of Huddersfield South NPT, said: “Last year saw an increase in robberies around freshers’ week so we are very pleased to have recorded significant falls in offences over September and the freshers’ period.

“Coming to a new university and town for the first time is an exciting and also scary time for many and we want students to gain a positive experience of our area through a safe introduction to life here.”
