A HUDDERSFIELD businessman was today named as one of Yorkshire's 15 wealthiest people.

Christopher Marshall, a director of Halifax-based construction group Marshall Holdings, is 13th on the regional rich list and comes 262 in the list of the UK's richest 300.

The Mail on Sunday Rich Report 2004 said Mr Marshall, who lives in the Huddersfield area, had a personal fortune of £152m compared with £109m last year.

The Yorkshire list - including both aristocrats with inherited wealth and self-made businessmen - is headed by the Duke of Devonshire, who is also the 13th richest person in the country.

The Duke, who owns the Bolton Abbey Estate in North Yorkshire, heads a family with a fortune of £1.6bn.

He is followed by Sir Ken Morrison, chairman of Bradford-based supermarket operator, who has a fortune of £1.45bn.

Sir Ken, who spearheaded Morrisons' takeover of Safeway, is ranked 16th nationally.

The regional rich list also includes Malcolm Healey (£790m), who made his fortune by selling the Hygena kitchens business to MFI, and his brother Eddie Healey (£600m), who built Sheffield's Meadowhall shopping centre.

They are joined by Paul Sykes (£470m), who partnered Eddie Healey on the Meadowhall project.

The list continues with Lord Kirkham and family (£249m). He started selling sofas from converted pool halls around West Yorkshire and built up the DFS furniture store chain.

David Hood (£246m) made his millions selling digital set-top boxes for TV sets at Saltaire, near Bradford. He now owns an aircraft maintenance firm based at Leeds-Bradford airport.

The Yorkshire list also incl- udes the Earl of Harewood at 14th with a fortune of £148m.

The Earl is president of Leeds United, but his wealth is tied up in the spectacular art collection at Harewood House, near Leeds.

Others on the list include York-based construction tycoons the Shepherd family (£215m), Michael Evans (£207m), of Leeds-based Evans Property Holdings, and Viscount Petersham (£198m), who owns land in London as well as an estate near Thirsk, North Yorkshire.
