A mum-of-three failed to provide a sample of breath when she panicked after being arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

Narinder Kaur, of St Paul’s Road in Kirkheaton, was upset over her cousin’s terminal cancer diagnosis and had a couple of glasses of spirits.

Police were called after a concerned member of the public came to her aid when she had a burst tyre as she drove home.

The 44-year-old was arrested after providing a positive roadside breath sample but then refused to comply with further breath tests at the police station.

She pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis on September 18.

Jonathan Slawinski, mitigating, explained that on the day Kaur had been to see a friend over the sad news that her cousin had terminal cancer.

He told Kirklees Magistrates’ Court: “She was depressed about the situation and wanted somebody to talk to.

“She’d had a couple of glasses of spirits and on route home her tyre burst and a concerned member of the public came out.

“She was panicking and feeling initimidated at the police station.

“She tried did try but failed (to give a sample) but accepts that’s not a defence.”

Kaur was banned from driving for 18 months.

She was fined £420 and ordered to pay £85 costs and £20 victim surcharge.
