A murder hunt is under way tonight in Newsome.

Detectives confirmed that a man found dead in a flat had been murdered.

It is thought he may have been stabbed.

The grim find was made at a flat in Ashenhurst Rise, at the junction with Roger Lane.

This evening, the scene was sealed off and a police forensic tent was erected in the garden of the semi-detached block.

Shocked neighbours watched as police and scientific officers wearing protective clothing went in and out of the house and also carried out door to door inquiries on the estate.

There were reports that a knife had been found at the park at the top of Roger Lane.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said there may have been a party at the flat on Thursday evening.

“There were always a lot of people coming and going to the flat”, said the neighbour.

A West Yorkshire police spokesman said detectives had launched the murder investigation after the body of an adult male was located inside the flat.

Officers were called to the flat at around 1pm this afternoon.

A 48 year old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder. He is currently in custody and enquiries are ongoing.

Senior Investigating Officer, Det Chief Insp Adrian Taylor said: ““Our enquiries are at a very early stage and we are currently working to ascertain the full circumstances behind this incident.

““The identity of the deceased is not yet clear, although I can confirm he is an adult male who we believe to be the occupant of the flat.

“I can say, however; that this is being treated as an isolated incident and there is no threat to the wider community.

“Forensic teams are at the address and an examination of the scene is underway.

“Local Neighbourhood Policing Team officers are also providing reassurance patrols in the area, speaking to residents about any concerns they may have”.

Mr Taylor made an appeal to anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

“Any witnesses or anyone with information should contact the non emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111,” he said.
