THE National Coal Mining Museum is taking part in a bid to bring more people into Yorkshire museums and galleries.

The museum, near Flockton, is one of many venues taking part in Museums and Galleries Month 2008, starting on May 1.

Venues will be holding unique or unusual events to draw in extra visitors.

On the Welcome Weekend from May 2 to 5 venues will offer fun family events.

From May 16 to 18 there will be a Museums At Night Weekend, where venues open their doors for late-night tours.

The National Coal Mining Museum will hold a series of activities from May 26 to 30.

They will be based on the theme of mining inventions.

Visitors can take part or take an underground tour of the museum, follow the nature trail or take the train to Hope Pit.

There will also be living history performances to entertain visitors.
