YOUNG musicians kept the valleys alive with the sound of music at the 53rd Haydn Wood Musical Festival.

The festival of the best young musicians closed on Saturday evening with a Concert of Prizewinners.

Watching the fine musicians was the Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees, Clr David Ridgway and his wife Karen.

Festival secretary Maureen Stead said: “The adjudicator, Margaret Smith, in her summing-up, said how much she had enjoyed this friendly Festival.

“She commended the standard of performance from the young people, together with the skill of all the young performers.

“Their parents and teachers should be proud,” she said and her heartfelt thanks went to all the performers.

She hoped her comments would help them improve, take forward and remember their skills and asked the audience to continue to encourage them.

She thanked the organisers and helpers for a wonderful weekend and also paid tribute to the accompanists for their excellent work over the two days.

The Haydn Wood Trophy for gaining the highest marks of the Festival as a young person living in the old Urban District of Colne Valley was won by Imogen Davey and Rebecca Stubbs, both of Marsden.

The Kirklees Leisure Services Trophy, for the overall highest mark of the Festival, was won by Abigail Askew from Lindley.

Margaret Fearnley, vice-chairman of the festival closed the evening by thanking Mrs Smith and all those who had contributed in any way towards the Festival.

The Recital Class, which this year was won by Ann Wilkes of Beaumont Park, once again gave a £100 prize and engraved medal to the winner and £50 to the second place.

Next year’s Festival, the 54th will be held from November 14-16.
