HUDDERSFIELD'S annual Mrs Sunderland competition comes to an end today after more than a week of music.

Audiences have been thrilled by talented youngsters and adults as they performed at Huddersfield Town Hall and at St Paul's Hall on the university campus.

Dalton singer Elizabeth Atkinson was chosen as Kirklees Young Musician of the Year last night, with percussionist Louise Emms, from Emley, as runner-up.

Twelve talented performers competed for the title, each giving a 15-minute programme.

Two other young people delighted judges at the competition yesterday .

Will Grace and David Schofield, already winners in their solo events, excelled in the solo instrumentalists challenge.

The event pits the winners of seven solo and open sections against each other.

Cellist Will, of Halifax, won the event while David, of Manchester, finished second with his piano performance.

A gala concert featuring outstanding performers from the week closes the festival tonight.

It gets under way at Huddersfield Town Hall at 7pm.

A spokesman said this year's festival had been hugely successful with more than 1,000 people taking to the stage.

He said: "It enhances Huddersfield's reputation as a place for quality music-making.

"We're delighted with the numbers of people who have come to watch."

The festival was first held in 1889 in honour of Brighouse soprano Mrs Sunderland.

It has been held every year since, except in 1940, soon after the start of the Second World War.
