DETECTIVES are investigating whether the deaths of a teenage girl and a man found shot dead in a field in South Yorkshire was a double murder or a murder-suicide.
Police revealed yesterday that the victims - Carolyn Lemm, 16 and Lee Smith, 20 - had been in a relationship but had recently split up.
Officers said they were looking at a "number of considerations" including a double murder or a murder and possible suicide.
Present at the incident on Tuesday night were a girl who ran to raise the alarm, and a 19-year-old man who was arrested and released on bail.
The bodies were found in countryside near the village of Woodsetts, near Rotherham.
Both had died from a single gunshot wound to the head and a double-barrelled shotgun was recovered by police from the scene.
The couple had been in a relationship. It is believed they had been together for several months but had broken up recently, police said.
The 19-year-old man was arrested in a car which was found a short distance from the bodies, off Woodsetts Road.
It appears that all four knew one another by name, mainly through the relationship between Miss Lemm and Mr Smith.
