DINERS have been left baffled by the mystery closure of a popular Huddersfield restaurant.

The Jumbo Chinese restaurant in John William Street is believed to have been closed for several weeks.

A notice on the window says the restaurant had been closed until further notice because of an “electrical fault”.

However, the premises have remained closed for some time and the telephone lines appear to have been disconnected.

The closure was highlighted by customer Violet Hanson, 47, of Almondbury, who had bought £30-worth of Jumbo vouchers for her brother and sister for Christmas.

When Dave Hanson and sister Donna tried to redeem their vouchers they found the restaurant shut.

Violet said: “My brother and sister were looking forward to going with their families but the place was shut.

“I went a couple of months ago and there was a sign saying they were closed due to electrical problems. We just don’t know what is happening.

“When I bought the vouchers in person before Christmas it was very busy.”

Violet said that while £30 wasn’t a lot of money, her brother and sister had been deprived of a Christmas present.

“The voucher has a six-month time limit and we just want to know when it’s going to re-open.”

The printed note on the window reads: “Dear Customers, we will be closed until further notice due to an electrical fault and apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. Jumbos.”

The restaurant could not be contacted for comment.

Jumbo had occupied the prominent building in John William Street for many years.

The building was the site of Huddersfield’s first Labour Exchange.
