An imposter claiming to be a former Pakistan cricket star has been giving ‘expert’ opinions to the BBC.

Nadeem Alam, who has only ever played cricket in Huddersfield, posed as ex-batsman Nadeem Abbasi on BBC World News, BBC Asian Network and Radio Five Live.

The 46-year-old was paid for the appearances, which included a discussion with former Indian batsman Aakash Chopra.

Mr Abbasi, who has played three Test matches for Pakistan, is annoyed after becoming aware of Alam’s antics.

The Sun newspaper reported that he criticised the BBC for not checking its facts.

He added that he would ‘punch Alam in the face’ if they ever meet.

It was reported that Alam has admitted blagging free sports gear after posing as a squash player.

Alam, now living in Hulme in Manchester, told The Sun: “I like to think I have been talking good cricket.

“But I am no longer pretending to be Nadeem Abbasi.”

The BBC apologised and said that it has launched an enquiry.
