HAPPY sprinter Naleem Tariq stormed to victory at an athletics meeting.

Naleem, a Newsome High School pupil, won the 80metre sprint for six to seven-year-olds in a time of 15.5 seconds at the Npower Yorkshire Deaf Athletics Championships at Thornes Park Stadium, Wakefield.

Pupils from nine Yorkshire schools took part in the event, which featured track and field events, including long jump, soft javelin and various sprints.

The event - organised by the Federation of Disability Sports Organisations - encourages deaf people to get involved in athletics.

Kevan Halliday-Brown, the FDSO's regional manager, said: "Events such as this provide many people with physical, learning, hearing and visual disabilities across Yorkshire with the opportunity to develop important skills."
