BADGER Brow, The Runtlings and Solid are some of the more bizarre street names in Kirklees.

But none appear on a new list of some of the strangest- sounding streets in the UK.

That honour goes to residents of Gillygooley Road, Burnieboozle Crescent, Whirligig Lane and Zin Zan Street.

New research has shown that High Street is the UK's most common address, followed by Station Road and Main Street.

Huddersfield's most wide- spread street names reflect the area's religious heritage, with plenty of Chapel Streets, Church Lanes and Church Streets.

George Street, New Street and Queen Street are also popular throughout the town, as well as the ubiquitous Mill Street.

They run alongside Crabby Lane, Doubting Lane, Dyke Bottom, Half Moon Street, Jumble Dyke, Little Cake, Mucky Lane and Old Robin.

Most of the country's street names have links to the past, when the church and farming played a central role in people's lives.

Church Road and Church Street emerge as the fifth and sixth most popular street names nationally.

Other names in the countrywide top 50 included Mill Lane, School Lane and Highfield Road.

The Halifax bank, which carried out the research, found that many street names reflected the country's royal heritage, with Queen, King, Victoria, John, Alexandra, George, Albert and Windsor street names all making the top 50.

Other roads - such as London Road, York Road, Manchester Road and Richmond Road - reflect places or general geographical references, such as North Road, South Street and West Street.

Food plays a significant role in street names outside the top 50, with streets including Pie Corner, Egg Lane and Bacon Drive, Creampot Close, Pudding Street and Jammy Lane.

Craig Donaldson, head of mortgage products at Halifax, said: "Street names reflect the heritage of the UK.

"As a result, names cover heroes from military history, great parliamentarians, figures from the world of art, history, music, poetry and literature, as well as girls' names, boys' names and tree names.

"Battles and major events from centuries past, as well as those that have taken place in living memory, are also included," he added.
