THIS week is National Chip Week and we thought we’d try to find Huddersfield’s favourite fish and chip shop.

We put the appeal for votes out through our website, Facebook and Twitter and Tony’s Chippy in Sheepridge came out tops.

But it also showed how much people love their fish and chip shops around Huddersfield – especially in Linthwaite.

Second was Batter Sea on Manchester Road in Linthwaite with nearby Harry Heywood’s, also on Manchester Road in Linthwaite, third.

Tony Butterfield, 55, has run his chippy with wife, Ann, for 34 years – since he was made redundant as an engineer at David Brown’s when he was aged just 20.

“The shop came up and I thought I’d give it a go and never looked back,” he said.

“I’ve kept it as a traditional fish and chip shop and only buy good quality fish and good quality potatoes. I only sell what I’d eat myself and it’s paid dividends.”

The couple have two daughters, Kelly and Louise.

On the right are just some of the comments that came in for Tony’s and other fish shops that people nominated.

FROM THE EXAMINER’S WEBSITE

Jan - there is absolutely no question which chippy is the best in Huddersfield. It is Scholes Fisheries and my mouth is watering just at the thought.

michaelblake - try the Batter Sea a newcomer to Linthwaite/Slaithwaite (used to be known as the Linfit Steps in an earlier incarnation) trying to do something different. Good, well cooked, fat chips. Fish cooked to order. Old fashioned Yorkshire fishcakes and scallops plus home made fish bites, chicken nuggets and deep fried hallomi.

Jpcherringto - Batter Sea fish bar on Manchester Road Linthwaite/Slaithwaite border – does fantastic fish and chips and they are also extra healthy so everyone still on a New Year health drive can still enjoy them!

F1Yorkie - Towngate, Newsome is amazing. Fish fried to order as you walk through the door. Delicious

westonbill - I left Linthwaite in the late 1960s but still remember the Ivy Hotel on Manchester Road and opposite the Ivy fish shop. Fish n’ chips cooked in dripping. Is there anywhere that still cooks in dripping?
