A WELL-loved pit pony at the National Coal Mining Museum for England has died.

Robbie had been at the museum at Overton between Huddersfield and Wakefield for 10 years and died from a sudden illness.

He had been a working pit pony and came from the coalfields of South Wales where he worked for five years in Pant y Gasseg drift mine.

His job was to pull coal tubs from the bottom of the drift up to the surface.

Robbie was the last horse to leave the Pant y Gasseg mine in 1999.

Donations can be made to the museum’s pit pony appeal in Robbie’s memory.
