THE number of unemployment benefit claimants rose by 14,600 to 919,700 last month.

Figures out today from the Office of National Statistics also showed that the number of people out of work rose by 37,000 to 1.53m between November last year and January.

Among local parliamentary constituencies the jobless tally in Huddersfield rose by 77 to 1,305 during February.

The figure for Colne Valley fell by four to 1,146.

The claimant count rose by 68 to 1,305 in Dewsbury, while Wakefield reported an increase of 38 to 1,613.

Official figures also showed that average earnings in the UK rose by 3.5% during the 12 months to January.

This figure was unchanged on the previous month.

The claimant count for Yorkshire stood at about 84,800 in February.

This was 1,300 up on the previous month and 14,800 higher than the total for February last year.
