A landlord's plan to build an outdoor drinking area has come under fire from some neighbours.

Grahame Nutt, landlord of the Jacobs Well, hopes to build a three-level terrace outside the pub on Woodhead Road, Honley.

But some neighbours fear drinkers on the terrace will create a noise nuisance.

Neighbour Moira Vangrove, who lives on Old Turnpike, at the back of Jacobs Well, said: “We will be affected. People will be affected on Woodhead Road.

“It’s mainly a noise issue.”

The application, which has been approved for recommendation by Holme Valley Parish Council, will be decided by Kirklees Council officers at a later date.

The team at the Jacobs Well in Honley are hoping for a beer garden and terrace, which overlooks Woodhead Road, could be built in time for next summer when the Tour De France cycle race is likely to fly past.

Mr Nutt says he has tried to minimise the disturbance by including a privacy fence in the proposal – and he plans to close the terrace after 9pm.

He said: “During the design period we took into consideration our neighbours and put on our planning application we would be closing the garden at 9pm.

“We will be erecting a fence and with the use of strategically placed screens, attempting to our best endeavours to guarantee the privacy of our immediate neighbours.

“In further consideration of our neighbours we are not providing any lighting to the area, which will help us to have the garden clear by 9pm due to the lack of natural light, and we will not be using the gardens for the playing of live or recorded music.

“The pub suffers a severe drop in trade during the summer months due to no external seating and dining area and has a detrimental effect on the commercial viability of the business.

“All we are trying to do is keep our trading levels constant throughout the year.”

Mr Nutt added: “We would have, and still would, welcome anyone with concerns to call and see us, we will listen to their comments and try wholeheartedly to allay their fears and concerns.”
