Youngsters at a Huddersfield school are celebrating a Lottery “win”.

The pupils and staff at Netherton Infant and Nursery School have been awarded a £5,900 Heritage Lottery Fund grant and plan to use the cash to help mark their centenary.

They also hope to get past pupils and other residents involved in the ‘Discovering, Remembering and Celebrate 100 years of Netherton School and Community’ project.

The grant will enable the school to deliver a series of workshops for pupils, families and the community to enable them to share discover and share recollections from the schools fascinating history as part of its 100 year centenary celebration.

The workshops will be led by local artist and facilitator, Jane Howroyd, and will culminate in the production of, ‘The Netherton Story Book’, a book that will bring together many stories, recollections and events from the past 100 years.

Netherton Infant and Nursery School was opened in January 1916 and has been a focal point in the community since it opened. The school owns a wonderful collection of school log books that contains fascinating daily accounts of life inside the school since it opened; the first entry was made by Harold Whitehead the head teacher at the time.

Head teacher Karen Beattie said: “Throughout the project we will be re-discovering the content of the school log books and sharing the events within them with the wider community. We will also be planning events where members of the community will be able to share their memories, recollections, photographs and mementos of the school’s history.

“We hope that our project will bring together generations of Netherton School pupils and other community members. The current pupils at the school will get a unique opportunity to learn about the schools unique history through fact finding missions, talking to local people and participating in school ‘back in time’ days.

“We are delighted to have been successful in this bid and can’t wait to get started on the research. We look forward to celebrating the stories and history from our last 100 years with the children and local community.”

Fiona Spiers, head of the Heritage Lottery Fund, Yorkshire and Humber said: “Sharing Heritage is a wonderful opportunity for communities to delve into their local heritage and we are delighted to be able to offer this grant so that ‘Discovering, Remembering and Celebrate 100 years of Netherton School and Community’ can embark on a real journey of discovery.

“Heritage means such different things to different people, and HLF’s funding offers a wealth of opportunities for groups to explore and celebrate what’s important to them in their area.”
