MATURE students were praised for their hard work yesterday at the Huddersfield University graduation ceremonies.

Tina Thornton, 43, of Almondbury, won the Betty Gartery prize for her extraordinary success in Historical Studies, where she graduated with a first class degree.

And there was also special praise for 70-year-old Josephine Hartley, who also graduated.

Ms Thornton said: "I have always wanted to go to university but never got the chance when I was younger.

"This course was great for me as it was very flexible so most of the time I could easily juggle family life with the workload I was expected to do."

The Betty Gartery award was set up in memory of a student who returned to study later on in life and who found it to be a highly beneficial and enriching experience.

Ms Thornton said: "I have had the most wonderful time on this course and enjoyed every minute of it. I am absolutely thrilled to have won this award. It is such an honour."

Another student who received much praise was 70-year-old Josephine Hartley, who for the past eight years has been a part-time student studying English Literacy.

She too graduated with a first class degree.

Mrs Hartley said: "I am very lucky that I have a very supportive family who have helped me throughout my time as a student.

"It was very hard work and challenging much of the time but I am now so proud of my achievements.

"It just shows, at 70, it is never too late to learn."

Mrs Hartley now faces a new challenge - a trip to the Himalayas.
