A NEW service is up and running for people with alcohol problems in Kirklees.

Alcohol Support Kirklees (ASK) has been set up by Alan Walker who was the director, general manager and secretary of Kirklees Alcohol Advisory Service (KAAS) for 15 years.

KAAS provides group sessions for people with drink problems, while ASK provides one-to-one sessions.

Mr Walker said: "ASK has time to listen to the long stories involved with people who are suffering through alcohol abuse.

"ASK fills a gap in local service provision for people who are experiencing alcohol problems, but are not yet ready or are scared of attending larger group meetings.

"The method is to see individuals for just one or two sessions and then persuade them to attend local groups or use other services provided by Lifeline, Alcoholics Anonymous or Kirklees Alcohol Advisory Service."

Mr Walker is now writing to GPs across Huddersfield to make them aware of the new service.

He added:

"The aim is to motivate drinkers to start to handle their problems and get back to normality." .
