VOLUNTEERS are needed to visit people in police cells.

West Yorkshire Police Authority is seeking to recruit more independent custody visitors.

Their role is to make sure that people held in custody but not yet convicted of any offence are being properly treated.

They observe and report on the condition of the cells, detention rooms, charge rooms, medical rooms, washing facilities, kitchen areas, exercise yards and CCTV systems.

A West Yorkshire Police Authority spokeswoman said: "We are looking for people from a wide variety of backgrounds and sections of the community who believe in upholding standards and care about the treatment of others."

Volunteers are expected to make at least 24 visits a year. The spokeswoman added: "Volunteers must be aged over 18, have broadly-based interests in the local community and the ability to bring useful experience to the role.

"Other qualities include good listening and communication skills, the ability to make informed, objective and independent judgements, the kind that stimulate dialogue and inspire confidence."
