PEOPLE are being urged to beware of a new bank con.

The thieves somehow manage to get hold of victims' bank details, then phone them up for more so they can steal cash.

Pc John Robinson, of West Yorkshire Police's economic crime unit, said: "It would appear the callers have some form of inside information relating to people's personal details.

"They will have the victim's name, card number and home phone number."

The thieves talk to the victims to get more numbers from their credit cards. They then steal sums of just under £500 from their accounts.

Pc Robinson said: "The victim gets a call from someone stating they are from Visa's security and fraud centre.

"They will say they have been tracking an unusual transaction on the victim's account, which is always under £500, usually about £497.95.

"The thief will give a six-digit investigation number and will trick the victim into giving the last three digits of the security number on the back of their Visa card."

Det Sgt Charlie Mann said: "Anyone receiving a cold call from someone purporting to be from the bank should not divulge any information. They should get the caller's name and say they will phone back, via the general number for the bank."
